Facts About Tennis Elbow
Tennis elbow is a particularly agonizing condition where the outer or lateral part of the elbow becomes unpleasant and tender.
This is normally as a result of overuse or a specific strain, for example over extending the elbow, or put another way, straightening the arm too swiftly or with too much force.
As much as anything it is due to a one handed backhand with poor method, or the snap due to coming late to a forehand shot, or a fast service where wrist pronation increases the wrist snap.
Almost everyone calls it tennis elbow, but it isn't only tennis players who suffer from it.
In truth anyone who lifts a lot in their job, or uses their wrist in repeated movements are subject to tennis elbow. In this way it is virtually an incessant strain injury.
Tennis elbow has been a recognized medical problem since 1883 and is known by doctors as ‘Lateral Epicondylitis’.
The symptoms of Tennis Elbow are quite simply agony on the outer part of the elbow, and gripping and movements of the wrist hurt, especially wrist extension and lifting movements. Put an alternative way lifting a cup of tea, or a drink of beer will hurt, and it will be impossible to throw a ball without elbow discomfort running down the forearm.
It's important to realise that over 50% of all tennis players will have Tennis Elbow at some point. Having said that, the vast majority of all cases of tennis elbow don't include tennis players at all.
A differential diagnosis of tennis elbow is significant, for it is easily confused with Golfer’s Elbow, and Bursitis.
The discomfort with Golfer’s elbow is on the inside and not the outside of the elbow. The discomfort with Bursitis is at the rear of the elbow, and is sometimes due to a direct blow or a fall onto the top of the elbow.
If you do not get it treated then tennis elbow can become chronic, and extraordinarily complicated then to ever lose it. Get your bones dealt with.
